"She looks like a movie star," Melody whispered to me over
her glass of sangria.
We both watched Miss Francesca approach our table on the
Hudson Hotel's Sky Terrace. Melody, one of my best friends
from college, was visiting Manhattan for the weekend. This
was her first introduction to Miss Francesca.
Miss Francesca crossed the rooftop garden with her graceful
gait, her hair pulled back in a French twist and her oversized
sunglasses framing her face. I watched others give her a
second look, wondering to themselves if they were in the
midst of a celebrity.
"She's a star in her own way," I answered. "You'll see."

Ice Cream Pants

Two summers ago it was rocky road ice cream.
Last summer it was blackberry swirl.
I have a major in ruining my white denim jeans each
summer, with a minor in ruining them with ice cream.
But I am a persistent girl. When I see the first wave of white
jeans arrive each spring, I vow that it will be different. I
imagine them crisp and bright, all the way to September.
If I do falter this year, though, at least I'll know the culprit:
Mint chocolate chip.
