In The Trenches

The first rainy days of autumn are the most magical to me.  I
pull out my cookbooks and begin to make my favorite soups:
minestrone, butternut squash, and potato leek.  All of these I
serve with fresh-baked baguettes and oodles of sweet cream
butter.

Miss Francesca comes to visit often during my soup-making
season, adding a pecan tart or bag of apple turnovers to the
feast.  We eat many scrumptious meals throughout the year,
but these are our some of our most indulgent.

Audrey rushes home from work, the sky already dark, and
enters the kitchen with the excitement of a 6 year old.  “What
kind are we having tonight?” she asks, as she peers over my
shoulder into the giant soup pot.

I mostly love to peek out of our front window and watch my
guests arrive, climbing the stoop in their lovely trench coats
to find a warm dinner inside.
